Today I had a really long think about the dreams I’ve had in my life, what I really would like to achieve with the time I have here on earth, and after a talk with a friend who is working a job of which I am totally jelly, I remembered a dream I had as a youngster.

When I was in my early teens, it was my dream to open a bookstore.  Not just any bookstore, but a new age bookstore, that sells not only books, but crystals, tarot decks, and other magical paraphernalia.  I envisioned cosy chairs, and a tea/coffee station, and healing rooms at the back of the store that could be used for massage, reiki, crystal healings, etc.  A warm, cosy, inviting store where you could spend five minutes or the entire day.

I got giddy re-imagining this dream today.  And I’m now wondering if this is something I could achieve.  I know anything is possible – it’s just a matter of the right timing.  Stores such as this don’t last long around my area, but at the moment there are so many different shops empty ready for lease.  I feel like I could really give it a good shot.  I have customer service experience, I have financial experience.  But I don’t have the upfront money to start this venture.  So I guess the hard part is – how do I begin?

Do I start by selling books & other tools from home, on Facebook and from an online store?  How do I afford the stock?  I would certainly need a risk management plan in place in case things didn’t go so well.  I would need to repay debt if I borrowed money from a bank, which is a risk within itself.

More thinking required, obviously, but this is something I could do along with being a childbirth educator/doula, being that that would not be a full-time role.

I'm Terri. I am a certified incubator, accomplished childbearer and working on my degree in housewifery. I also hold qualifications in pet ownership. I am of the Tasmanian variety, Pagan by religion, 28 by years, and prefer constant change of my environment over stagnation. I still can't get my shit together when it comes to a career, so currently I work from home.

I wish you luck in your dreams. It’s difficult to start out with so many questions that are brimming around and finding the right solutions or many angles to get it working.

I’d probably start with selling from home or maybe through ebay.. it’s not as glamorous but you can see how things sell and you’ll have a wider audience with less overheads.

You could see if you could find some investors rather than having to borrow from the bank. Maybe people you know who are interested in the same thing?

I think this would be amazing, and something I could see you nurturing and developing throughout your whole life, given your interest in books, spirituality, healing and all the other things you spoke of. I think our area needs places like this!
I really like that you are thinking about what will give your life meaning and make you feel fulfilled beyond your family and relationship – I am doing the same at the moment, if a little late (and without having even a family and relationship to fulfil me to begin with!) and have decided that even if a dream will take a year or five or ten to achieve, it will still be worth it to be able to stand one day and say that your dream came true. Also, I think you would be an excellent childbirth educator and I am booking you in advance for the day I find myself in need of one!
